EPP-sovereignist alliance not on agenda, Tajani tells ANSA

(ANSA) - Rome, January 11 - An alliance between the European
People's Party (EPP) and 'sovereignist' parties is "not on the
agenda" after the European elections in May, European Parliament
President Antonio Tajani told an ANSA Forum on Friday.
"The sovereignists will not get the result they expect, it's
only propaganda," he added, speaking of the Italian situation.
The anti-migrant Euroskeptic League party of Interior
Minister Matteo Salvini is looking to set up a European alliance
of the so-called sovereignists, rightwing nationalist parties
who put national sovereignty ahead of international obligations.
He has reached out to France's Marine Le Pen, Hungary's
Viktor Orban, and the nationalist government in Poland, as well
as Danish and other far-right nationalists.
The League's domestic partner, the anti-establishment 5-Star
Movement, has also been described as a national-populist party.
Deputy Premier and anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S)
leader Luigi Di Maio's support for the French Yellow vests
protest movement is "in favour of subversion," said Tajani, who
is also deputy president of Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right
Forza Italia (FI) party.
Tajani said Premier Giuseppe Conte "wants to reinforce his
position but the Italian government doesn't count in Europe if
another deputy premier (Di Maio) sides with those who devastate
cities, the Yellow Vests, in favour of subversion".
